My Oxford College, Magdalen (pronounced “mordlin”)  is one of the 38 constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Founded in 1458, its long and interesting history is interwoven with the lives of important scholars and public figures from every possible area of endeavour.

Today, Magdalen is a lively and welcoming community of academics and students which prides itself not only in its academic excellence, but its friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Magdalen has one of the most generous student support schemes in Oxford and is dedicated to ensuring that the brightest and best students have the opportunity to study at the College, irrespective of their background or financial circumstances. The College is also among the most beautiful in Oxford: Magdalen’s Great Tower is the tallest and most splendid in the city, and the College also boasts a Deer Park, extensive grounds, and its very own Botanic Garden.

I teach undergraduate Physics and Engineering Science courses at the College and am also Magdalen’s Widening Participation Fellow. I was a student at Magdalen myself between 2003 and 2011 and I have a special interest in encouraging young people to feel inspired about further education and recognise their ability to influence the future of the world in which we live.

In connection with my work in physics, engineering, and archaeology, I co-direct, with Roger Michel, an educational programme called FOX that works to bring to life the important relationships between the sciences, the arts, and the humanities.
